HTC Droid Eris Overview
The HTC Droid Eris launched for Verizon Wireless on November 6th in part as the carrier's first Android Phone. However it was overshadowed by the other member of the inaugural Verizon Droid duo - the Motorola Droid. The Droid Eris might look familiar because it was first launched months ago in Europe as the HTC Hero and later showed its face as the Sprint HTC Hero in the United States. With a few stylistic changes including a taller and thinner frame, call and end hardware buttons and coloration differences, the HTC Droid Eris is essentially the HTC Hero on Verizon Wireless.

The HTC Droid Eris comes loaded with the customized version of Android called "Sense" from HTC that brings many design and functionality improvements to the phone. At the most basic level, there are more homescreens, an improved UI, more widgets and tighter integration with your contacts.
Rather than providing a COMPLETE review of the HTC Droid Eris, we suggest you check out our HTC Hero Review as they are essentially the EXACT same phone.
Although the Droid Eris launched in the shadow of the Motorola Droid, only a couple months ago this was THE BEST Android Phone on the market and with only a $99 price when it first launched, the HTC Droid Eris is an incredibly attractive purchase and comes highly recommended.

HTC Droid Eris Reviews

Though its performance wasn't completely top-notch and we would prefer a more recent Android OS version, the HTC Droid Eris is a satisfying Android device that offers a nice contrast to the Motorola Droid. And you can't beat the price.

They give the Droid Eris an 85/100 calling it "Very Good" and saying, "If you want a cheaper Android-based alternative to the Droid and can live without a hardware keyboard, the Droid Eris is a good choice..."

Acknowledging it isn't the highest powered Android phone, the folks at SoftSailor still love it: "Compare it with any other phone in its price range and the Droid Eris is the obvious winner. The HTC Eris looks good, it feels great, it has a great user interface."

The folks at InfoSyncWorld really like the HTC Droid Eris. Although they note Android might be too complex for newbs, they say give it an 81/100 saying: "Best interface on a mobile device. Social networks integrate neatly with online contacts and calendars. Detailed and useful information presented during calls."

The first couple sentences from Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan say it all (at least on launch day): "I've reviewed the Droid Eris twice before, when it was called the Hero. The difference is that Verizon's selling it for half the price, making it the cheapest Android phone you can buy—and the best, for the money.

Got $100 to spend? ZDNet says the Droid Eris is probably you're best bet out of any smartphone on the market.

Lisa from MobileTechReview.com gives the HTC Droid Eris 3.5 out of 5 stars and noted the following bright spots: "Looks great and feels great in the hand. Fairly easy one-handed operation. Display is quite bright and sharp. Capacitive display is responsive and HTC has added pinch zoom in the web browser. Great web browsing, excellent support for Google services, can sync to MS Exchange and Outlook on the desktop. Very customizable. We still love Android's elegant and unobtrusive notification system."

One of the only tech sources to be disappointed in the Droid Eris, Wired.com's Priya points out the pitfalls of the Droid make it difficult for him to recommend.

I would much prefer her to just go by "Chloe" but "Cellular Chloe" as she calls herself, from WirelessZone, gives us her newb view of the Droid Eris. I can't imagine doing phone reviews with those nails is easy... and that is the most interesting part of the review itself.
